In January 2007, SHIRE relocated its offices to 1776 Massachusetts Ave., Suite 615, Washington, DC 20036, near Dupont Circle. Dr. Russell Davis and Ruth Perot have been named Visiting Scholars with the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI), which is headquartered at this address. NASI’s mission is to promote understanding and informed policymaking on social insurance and related programs. Its scope covers Social Security, Medicare, worker’s compensation and related areas. Dr. M. Christopher Gibbons, Associate Director of the Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute and a SHIRE Board member, recently became President of the International Society for Urban Health. In this role, he has primary responsibility for the planning of the Society’s annual conference, which will be held in October 2007 in Baltimore, Maryland, with an expected attendance of 1,000 individuals from 40 countries. The conference theme is “Technology, Behavior and Urban Health.” SHIRE is planning a special presentation on HIT and Health Disparities for the conference.
Claudia Schlosberg, Partner, Blank Rome LLP, received the HIMSS November 2006 “Spirit of HIMSS” Award from the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Schlosberg is Vice Chair of SHIRE’s Board of Directors. The award honors contributions and volunteer efforts which allow HIMSS to advance and improve as a society.
Dr. Clay Simpson, former Director of the Office of Minority Health, Department of Health and Human Services, has agreed to serve as the chair of SHIRE’s National Advisory Council, which is a vehicle through which distinguished professionals in health and related fields can share their experiences and guidance with the organization’s leadership.
Recent appointments of SHIRE principals include Davis’ service as a member of the Institutional Review Board of MedStar, and Perot’s designation as a non-voting member of the HIMSS Advocacy and Public Policy Steering Committee.
